How to tell when your door is going to go wrong
What is wrong with my door?
Problem one;
The door does not close fully, it is slightly ajar
and there is a draught.
This can be a sign that your door closer
is not clamped in properly, the fixings may be loose or some have sheared off. The door could even fall completely off as
it is opened. Sometimes we can cure this problem with a simple service visit, or it may require some parts replacing.
We carry spare parts.
This could also mean that the powerful spring and cam inside the closer device is wearing
out. The closure system should be replaced. We stock many types of door control.
Finally, we also
see this problem when the top arm is badly worn, we have several types of this inexpensive part in stock so that we can
quickly repair your door.
Problem two;
There is
a nasty, sticky, dirty mark at the top of the door and frame. Maybe in advanced stages this mark has run all the way down
your door.
The hydraulic oil can leak from a door closer, this then
attracts dirt to form an unpleasant stain or even gets on the hands or clothes of people coming through the door. We
can replace the faulty closer and clean down your door with degreaser.
Problem
three;
The door closes very quickly, it may slam or swing both ways several times before stopping.
The hydraulic oil has completely run out, leaving no checking action to slow or control
the door. Now the strong door spring inside the unit powers the door shut and it's momentum becomes dangerous or damaging. You guessed it, we've got replacements!
Problem four;
The door is difficult to open and makes a horrible noise. Maybe it doesn't always close all the way either. Perhaps
you can see silver metal from under the colour coating near the bottom hinge? - see our gallery page.
The hinge pivots are either worn or their fixings are loose and they have drifted
out of alignment. Some cheaper pivot systems just break down over time, some just need adjusting properly. We carry several
types of pivot hinge in stock so that when we take your door off, it can almost always be repaired in one visit.
Problem five;
It clonks! Or clunks, or knocks. Sometimes with this problem it feels
like the door kicks or jumps a little as you open it. At it's worse the door actually wobbles a bit at the top.
These symptoms occur when the bracket holding the top arm works loose. We often have to drill new fixing holes to make this
secure again.
See the gallery picture page for illustrations of some of these faults.
